Why I Changed Everything – The Cosy Bird Story

Why I Changed Everything – The Cosy Bird Story

I’m Katherine, businesswoman, mum of two, founder of The Cosy Bird, and someone who’s learning to embrace change, growth, and a more natural way of living.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you might remember my first business Oh My Aroma (OMA). It was my little escape—a home fragrance brand built during nap times and late nights. And I loved it. I loved the creativity, the community, the scent of a freshly poured wax melt filling up my kitchen.

But as time went on, something didn’t sit right.

The more I worked with synthetic fragrances, the more I started noticing the side effects—headaches, irritability, even skin sensitivity. I began reading, researching, and digging into what these chemicals actually are. What they do to our bodies. What they’re doing in our homes. And honestly? It scared me.

These synthetic chemicals haven’t been around that long in the grand scheme of things… so how do we really know the long-term impact they’re having on our health and our families?

That’s when I knew I had to change everything.

A Shift in Direction

I pressed pause on OMA. I stopped creating new products. I still sold the stock I had, but I couldn’t bring myself to pour another melt or light another candle that I didn’t feel 100% good about. I fell out of love with it, and that’s when I knew I needed to go back to my why.

Years ago, I trained with essential oils. I knew their benefits. I used to use them in my home, but somewhere along the way I followed a trend and stepped away from that. This time, I decided to do things differently. Better.

I became more conscious of everything in my home—fragrance, cleaning products, even washing powder. I wanted better for me, for my family, and for the incredible customers who trust me to bring warmth and wellbeing into their homes.

So I started fresh. And that’s how The Cosy Bird was born.

What We Do Now

At The Cosy Bird, we create hand-poured candles and home fragrances made only with pure essential oils and natural wax. Everything is eco-conscious, free from synthetic fragrances, and crafted with care for your wellbeing and peace of mind.

We believe scent is powerful—it can calm your nervous system, boost your mood, help you focus or wind down. We don’t just sell candles—we sell moments of calm, comfort, and connection.

And because we believe in doing good beyond business, we launched our charity initiative Cosy Kids, helping children stay warm during the cold months. Every product you buy helps us get closer to donating 500 coats, hats, and bedding by October 2025.

Why I’m Blogging

This blog is my way of staying honest and open with you through every stage of this journey. It’s a space where I can share what we’re working on, ask questions, connect with other mums, parents, and women like me who are trying to build something meaningful while keeping their home and heart healthy.

I’d love to hear from you:

  • Have you made the switch to natural products in your home?

  • What made you start thinking more consciously about what you use?

  • Are there certain scents, products, or rituals that help you feel more grounded?

  • What would you love to see from The Cosy Bird next?
