How to Choose a Natural Non-Toxic Candle
Choosing a candle should feel simple, comforting even — but in a world full of synthetic fragrances, paraffin waxes, and hidden ingredients, it can feel overwhelming. After my own journey from synthetic fragrance oils to essential oils (and the side effects that pushed me to make the switch), I’ve learned that what we burn in our homes matters far more than we realise.
Here’s what to look for when choosing a natural, non-toxic candle for your home.
1. Check the Wax Type
A truly non-toxic candle begins with a clean, natural wax. At The Cosy Bird, I use coconut & rapeseed wax because it burns beautifully, comes from sustainable crops, and doesn’t release harmful petrochemicals into your home. Paraffin, on the other hand, is a by-product of petroleum and is known to release toxins as it burns.
2. Avoid Synthetic Fragrance Oils
This is the biggest one. Synthetic fragrances can cause headaches, irritation, and hormone disruption — all reasons I stopped using them completely. Natural essential oils not only smell beautiful, but they also offer mood-supporting benefits.
3. Look for Transparency
A trustworthy candle maker should list:
-
Wax type
-
Oils used
-
CLP information
-
Burn time
-
Any allergens
I share everything openly because I know how important it is to feel safe and confident in what you’re burning in your home.
4. Choose Small-Batch, Hand-Poured
Small-batch makers take time to perfect every pour. I pour all candles myself in my studio — labels, boxes, blends — everything is made intentionally, with care.
5. Trust How It Makes You Feel
A natural candle should never overwhelm you. It should enhance your home, your mood, and your wellbeing, not dominate it.
Choosing a natural, non-toxic candle isn’t just about fragrance — it’s about choosing better for your home, your health, and your daily rituals.
And that’s exactly what The Cosy Bird is built on.
